Introducing Your Partner to Skincare

How to elevate your partners skin care routine

A frequently asked question I get as a Dermal Therapist is “What skin care should my partner use?”.

We all know that hair raising feeling we get when our partner says, ‘I use a 3 in 1 face, body and hair wash!’. Hearing that sentence is as bad as nails on a chalk board... If you are as anti 3 in 1 as me, and want to give your partner's skincare routine a simple but effective boost to keep them looking their best all year round, then keep reading.

This is where the saying “slow and steady wins the race” really comes into play, start out slow by introducing one product at a time, e.g, a good face wash that compliments their skin. It's important to consider whether that may have dry, combination or oily skin, here are some of my personal picks for the above skin types.

Dry Skin -Vital C Image Hydrating Facial Cleanser 177ml

Combination Skin - Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel 500ml

Oily skin - Alpha-H Triple Action Cleanser 185ml

Introducing products one at a time tends to be the way to go this helps your partner get comfortable with the products, and will eventuate into a routine. Once they are familiar with their new cleanser, you can slowly introduce an SPF, moisturiser and even a targeted serum as time goes on. Be sure to lookout for some key ingredients that may benefit their skin type/concerns.

Look for products with the following ingredients that will be beneficial for their individual needs:

Acne Prone and Oily

Salicylic Acid

This is abeta-hydroxy acid  (BHA), which penetrates deep into the lower layers of the skin for a deeper exfoliation to unclog pores and prevent further breakouts.

Glycolic Acid

This is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which helps to break down the first few layers of dead skin and speed up the skin cell turn over period. Ultimately, this improves product absorption into the lower layers of skin, making the skin appear more supple, bright as well as slowly dissipate unwanted pigment such as sun damage or post acne scarring.

Dry and Dehydrated

Niacinamide

Niacinamide creates ultimate hydration in the skin this is derived from Vitamin B3 which works to maintain the skins sebum production, regulate moisture and strengthen the skins barrier.

Squalane

This hydration powerhouse is commonly known for it's soothing and quenching benefits, making it a must have for skins prone to eczema or dermatitis.

Textured and Anti-Ageing

Retinoids

Retinoids are a derivative from Vitamin A, and help with all sorts of skin concerns. Particularly, they are AMAZING for improving overall texture, anti-ageinglightening pigment and reducing acne and breakouts. Retinoids come in all different forms and potencies, so being sure to only use this product 1-2 times a week initially is the best way to start. It is common to have a dry period when introducing this product, I call this the “onboarding period”. This occurs when the skin is getting used to the product and can get a little dry and angry, but there's no need to worry! This is totally normal. If this happens, ease off the product until your skin has calmed down and balanced out to it's normal state, allowing this time will be best for your skin.
